SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Musical Entertainment-The next entertainment program is Monday, November 2 at 1:00 PM. Instrumental acoustic guitarist JP Shannon Jr. will present a program that includes an eclectic variety of musical genres, from pop and contemporary, classics to blues, and ragtime to classical favorites.  Refreshments will be provided.  The program is $2 for Senior Center members and $4 for others.  You do not need to make reservations or have a ticket for this program.  Call Donna Mattison at 860.721.2979 if you have questions.  There is no entertainment program in October.

SeniorNet Computer Center Course  Registration-The next date is Tuesday, October 13 from 1-3 pm.  You can learn about scheduled computer classes, fees and membership requirements and, if interested, register for a course.  You can pick up a schedule of courses available through-Dec 2009.  Free workshops scheduled from mid October through December are:  Keyboard Shortcuts Power of Google and Comparison of Word 2003 vs. 2007.  Courses scheduled from mid October through December are:  Computer Fundamentals, Introduction to Using Your Computer, File Management:  Where Did My Work Go?, Introduction to the Internet, E-Mail From A to Z, Using a Digital Camera, Introduction to Excel. Belly Dance-The 8-session class costs $16, plus current Senior Center membership; it begins Thursday afternoon 10/1.

Book Club-The next book discussion is Monday, October 26. The group meets in Room S-3 of the Center at 1 pm.

Wii  Bowling-This interactive video game is great fun!  New bowlers are welcome to join the Thursday afternoon practices at 1 PM to learn the game.

Health

Cholesterol Screening-This free service is available Thursday morning, 10/1.  Participants with elevated c holesterol levels may then enroll in a Cholesterol Education program. Appointments are required.  Call 860.721.2818.

Free Blood Pressure Screenings-Blood Pressure Clinics are scheduled for the mornings of 10/7, 10/14, 10/21, 10/28 from 10:30 to 11:30AM.  The following area agencies assist with this service:  Patients Choice Home Care, Maple View Manor and Wethersfield Health Care Center.

Give it a Shot:  A Brunch and Learn for Seniors-Please join us on Thursday, October 8 at 10 AM in Room S-2 for an informational program on Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccinations.  The discussion will be led by a representative from the American Lung Association and the program is co-sponsored by the Central Connecticut Health District and the Senior Center.  Participants will receive free care packages, informational packets and a light morning snack.  In order for us to have sufficient food and handouts, you must call Donna Mattison at 860.721.2979 to sign up.

Seasonal Flu Clinic-Tuesday, October 13 at the Pitkin Community Center 1-4PM.  Additional clinics are: 10/9 at the Berlin Com. Center 1-4PM; 10/16 at the Newington Sr & Disabled Center 9am-12N; and 10/20 at the Rocky Hill Community Center 9am-12N.

Blood Sugar Levels Checked-This free service is available on Tues. 10/13 Appointments are required.  Call 860.721.2818.

Hearing Screening-On Mon 10/19 the Hearing Wellness Center of CT provides a free screening, cleaning/testing of any type hearing aid.  Call 860.721.2979 for an appointment.

Social Services

Senior expo Regional event-On Tuesday, October 27 from 9:30AM to 11:30 AM State Senator Paul Doyle is presenting a 9th District Senior Expo.  Senator Doyle says, “ In an effort to learn more about the needs of my senior constituency as well as strengthen the communication between the five towns I represent—Cromwell, Middletown, Newington, Rocky Hill and Wethersfield—I have organized a non-political annual event that will allow seniors to access services and information at one central location.”  The event is being held at the Cromwell Senior Center gymnasium, 41 West St. in Cromwell.  In addition to information about resources there will be refreshments, free health screenings and a raffle.

Operation in as much-This is a one day outreach event modeled after a program in the south which mobilizes community church members and sends them out into the community to meet the practical needs of its citizens.  Working in teams, on Saturday, October 10 the First Church of Christ, Wethersfield, family will fan out into the Wethersfield community to tackle a number of service projects and help persons who are elderly, disabled or needy.  Projects are limited to tasks that can be completed, from start to finish, in four to five hours and relate to housecleaning, yard clean-up and simple maintenance such as painting or just helping out.  If you are in need of such help and would like to be considered as a candidate for help on that day, or know of someone who could benefit from this outreach, please contact Donna Mattison at 860.721.2979, e-mail, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. EMPLOYMENT RESOURCE FOR THE MATURE WORKER-The “Ready to Work” program provides job skills training to Connecticut residents age 55 and older who are unemployed and have a family income that is not more than 125% of the poverty level.  (For an individual that is currently $13,537.50 or lower per yr and for a couple $18,212.50 or lower per yr.)  Participants are placed in temporary training assignments to gain on-the-job work experience and training.  Individuals will work 20 hours a week at the training sites and be paid the minimum wage.  For more information about this resource contact Jennifer Gorman at 860.424.5643.
